![]() ![]() He starts going into all the reasons why specific musical choices were made, and how they help personify a Type 1 in musical form, and I'll tell ya. I just realized there is a podcast that Ryan O'Neal (of Sleeping At Last) started just a few months ago where he explains his process of writing songs, and in episode 4, he dissects ONE for us. This is just so many of my favorite things coming together! Simply gorgeous music with rich insightful lyrics, diving deep into each personality type. It's as beautiful as I expected it to be. Late this summer, I found out that "Sleeping At Last" is going to start a new project where he's going to write songs from the perspective of each enneagram type! I already knew I was going to love it, and I couldn't wait! And finally, last month there it was in my inbox, an email from Sleeping At Last, with a link to the new song: ONE. I don't know if that makes sense, but I'm really BLAZING through this because I don't want to really EXPLAIN the ENNEAGRAM here, I want to talk about what I'm excited to tell you about! (But if you want to learn more about the Enneagram, THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START) If you take a good test, it tells you what you can do to become a healthier version. ![]() It depends on the state or season that I'm in, but the fact that I'm that number really doesn't change. I can either be a "healthy" version of that number, or "unhealthy" version (and there's middle of the road too). There are a total of 9 Enneagram types, and out of the 9, everyone has a predominant type (and some would argue that we are born with this dominant type). In fact, I became OBSESSED about learning everything I can about it - because unlike other personality tests that merely assess you as you are and leave it at that, the Enneagram can show you specifically what steps you can take to become a BETTER version of your true self. I didn't want to know anymore. □īut this 2nd time around, it stuck (thanks to Doug and Adele Calhoun - who I also happen to work with!). Probably because an example of the worst version of my enneagram type was OJ Simpson, and for Jinny, it was Woody Allen. Years ago, our friends in NY tried to turn my wife and I onto this personality test - and I immediately gave up trying to understand it. I immediately laugh in disbelief and say "HOW DID THAT HAPPEN"? □□□įast forward to a few months ago when I was introduced (for the 2nd time) to the Enneagram. ![]() And there I am, a few minutes into one of the songs, and I'm in tears. We sit quietly in the car in LA traffic, listening. He tells me that when I listen to his songs, I'm gonna cry.įirst of all, whenever someone hypes something up like that, even if I want to be impacted by it, I already start building up a wall and brace myself to be disappointed. He turns on the album "Yearbook". He turns on music by this artist " Sleeping At Last". Years ago, I was in the passenger seat of my friend Jason's car, and we were driving around in LA. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to the humour, above-average gameplay and incredible authenticity, it's undeniably succeeded. One can imagine that when EA decided to snap up The Simpsons video game licence, it set itself the task of making the best piece of software ever based on the animated family. With a few days' solid play you'll breeze through the game quite easily, and there's precious little here in terms of replay value. Alas, the same criticism applies to this version, too. When we reviewed the DS edition a while back we were a little disappointed by the rather slim play time. The music is also extremely faithful to that heard in the show. As previously mentioned, several members of the original cast have been drafted in to provide their vocal talents exclusively for the video game and the sheer amount of spoken dialogue contained within the game means you don't get annoyed with any constantly repeating phrases. Lastly, the 3D camera is prone to causing some serious headaches during play and cannot be relied upon to always give you the best view of the action. Level designs, meanwhile, range from decent to downright ugly, but much of their appeal lies in the fact that they reference familiar locations in the TV show. The graphics are obviously scaled down from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, resulting in some rather angular-looking character models, but everything moves along at a fair old pace. Sadly, you can't tackle the stages with a character of your choosing but some missions do involve another family member, which adds a much-needed touch of diversity to proceedings. It's best described as a 3D platformer, although there are brawling elements included as well.Įach member of the Simpsons family possesses two standard attacks and a variety of different abilities, each ideally suited to overcoming the particular problems and obstacles that litter the levels within the game. ![]() Unlike the DS version – which was rather hampered by the modest hardware – the PSP edition takes direct inspiration from the home console versions of the game. It's a bit of a shame, then, that underneath these wonderfully polished trimmings the actual core game itself isn't tremendously arresting. Couple this with several minutes of animated cut-scenes and you have an experience that is faithful to the source material in a way few other licensed games have ever managed. The publisher also deserves praise for acquiring the services of not only the original voice actors, but also the scriptwriters who make the TV show such a riot. EA is arguably the last company you'd expect to encourage this kind of wonderfully anarchic mickey-taking, but it should be commended for not pulling any punches. Fun is poked at high-ranking mascots, game designers and general video gaming clichés (predictable 'weak spots' on end-of-level bosses, for instance), all in the typically cutting Simpsons style.Īlthough other companies have taken similar steps and produced knowingly 'post modern' hits (such as Nintendo with its WarioWare franchise), the acerbic humour seen in The Simpsons is head and shoulders above anything that has been before. If you're a passionate gamer, you'll lap up the sharp observations and satirical comments featured within The Simpsons. Rather than take the easy option or creating a game that sticks slavishly to the plot of the recent cinematic outing, EA has wisely decided to create a unique experience and has packed the product with a quite frankly insane amount of fan service. As you might expect, much of the humour relies on the player having some familiarity with the TV show, but the vast majority of the gags will amuse even if you've been locked in a time capsule for the past two decades and have bypassed The Simpsons craze altogether. Thankfully, it's now possible to add another to that elite group. As a result there has been only a handful of games blessed with the ability to make you laugh out loud. The fact that the player is in control of the pace means the all-important element of comic timing is utterly compromised. Genuine humour is a notoriously difficult thing to carry off in a video game. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This means that you will never be stuck in an area with no Internet connection and unable to watch your favorite movies and TV shows!
